A RETREAT & COLLOQUIUM for Established Writers, Artists, Scholars

Focus: intensive work on manuscripts, scores and concepts in Lorca’s city - hosted by me, facilitator for consultations and discussion, and complemented by informal seminars. I will also present a Keynote Address.

Lorca's World: The fabulous Alhambra and its Generalife gardens was as much the world of Lorca for visting artists as it is simply one of the world's most visited monuments by travellers from the world over. Lorca was profoundly influenced by this jewel and as fellow poet of the Generaion of '27 Rafael Alberti wrote, the two of them were seduced by the poems written in Arabic on the walls of the Alhambra and the translations into Spanish that were done by Emilo Garcia Gomez. Two of these poemsI translated into English for my 2003 book, Three Gardens of Andalucia.

**New this year is a visit to the brand new Centro Federico Garcia Lorca, dedicated to the work and spirit of Lorca, with exhibitions and cultural events.

While the spirit and presence of the great artist permeates this magical city, we also follow the Ruta de Lorca. At the southern end of the city is the Lorca house in the Huerta de San Vicente where he wrote plays - and there is an excellent museum where we will meet a local poet who runs tours there.

A short bus trip route to the outskirts will find us in the villages of Fuente Vaqueros, his birthplace, where there is a museum in the house of his first years; then we go to Valderrubio, the village where he spent his childhood and went to school. Here we find the Andalucía and province of Granada, the landscape aboutwhich he wrote with such affection and longing. For writers and especially longtime lovers of the writing of Lorca this will be an utterly moving and creatively inspirational experience! I have arranged to have a local poet accompany us on the outing to the countryside that was so precious to Lorca and is to Granada artists today.

Literary Activities:
I will be on hand to facilitate all aspects of the writing activities.
I will meet with each writer (upon request) for long one-on-one sessions one or two times during the 2 weeks. These sessions can be casual or intensive, and for one of the individual meetings, a whole morning or afternoon can be held in reserve just for you.

Anyone who desires to simply go it alone when it comes to their project, should feel free to do so. I will always be on hand and ready for those, should they want to discuss something- whether directly related to their writing or not. Discussions can be about such things as flamenco, the culture of al-Andalus, the fascinating relationship between Japanese and Spanish (especially) Andalucian cultures, the nature of gastronomic cultures etc. (i.e. whatever might be part of our ‘art.’)
